Planting in Aconite

These little beauties are Monkshood (Aconitum napellus). We’re planting these young Aconite’s into nursery beds where they will remain for the next year. Many people will be familiar with Aconite as a Homeopathic remedy but not many people, including our Homeopath friends, recognise the plant. These baby Aconites have been planted near some of our other medicinal plants that are also used in homeopathy like Ruta graveolens, Phytolacca decandra and Arnica montana.

Aconite isn’t commonly grown here in Ireland. This is because many people consider it quite dangerous to have in the garden. I must say, if you are not familiar with this medicinal plants properties it isn’t one we recommend you try keeping. It is best to have knowledge of the herbs growing in your garden – especially any ‘baneful’ or poisonous plants.

While planting in these few young Aconite plants I could feel the effects of touching its foliage and roots! I was careful not to be engaging as much with them as I normally do when working with other herbs as Aconite is highly toxic and can be deadly, if abused. We do make herbal remedies from this plant but never prescribe it to patients in clinic.

As herbalists we don’t always ingest herbs to avail of their healing properties or their energies. One can explore and enjoy the energy of this fascinating ‘poisonous’ herb simply by spending time with it. I have a special interest in plant poisons and very much enjoy growing and engaging with these plants. I look forward to seeing these baby Aconites flourish in this nursery bed like their older siblings in the herb garden until they are ready to go to their own homes. Ivywood Botanicals medicinal plant nursery will be reopening in 2021 where we will have our full stock of herbs available to buy again 😊
