Volunteering at the Nursery

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us at Ivywood. We receive many enquiries about volunteer opportunities, so please read through the information below to understand what is involved.

Our medicinal plant nursery, Ivywood Botanicals, operates mostly online where we bareroot plants and carefully pack them for overnight shipping across Ireland and abroad. We grow over 200 species of medicinal plants.

Volunteer work in the herb nursery includes:

  • Potting on seedlings and plants
  • Watering potted plants
  • Weeding herb beds
  • Occasional harvesting of herbs for drying

What you will learn:

  • Identification of medicinal plants
  • Growing requirements of specific species
  • Basic information on their medicinal uses

For more information about the plants we grow and sell, visit our Medicinal Plant Nursery Shop .

Please note: volunteers in the nursery will not be making herbal remedies or learning in depth about herbal medicine treatment of conditions. You will always be given clear instructions but may at times work alone or with other volunteers.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us through the Contact Us page.

We will be taking nursery volunteers from Spring 2021.

Unfortunately, we cannot offer accommodation for volunteers. Please bring a packed lunch.

Ivywood Woodland

We manage 40 acres of mixed woodland at Ivywood. Timber from the woods is being used for our roundhouse build, and we are always happy to share our knowledge of woodland care and management.

Volunteer work in the woodland includes:

  • Coppicing
  • Thinning
  • Creating woodland pathways
  • Restoring old woodland drains
  • Planting native species
  • Replanting self-seeded saplings

Please note: woodland volunteers will not be making herbal remedies or studying herbal treatment of conditions. You will always work under instruction and alongside us.
