Available from May. A creeping, lush green medicinal perennial with rounded, water-lily–like leaves, prized for its calming and focus-supporting traditional uses.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Centella asiatica forms a low, spreading mat of bright green, scalloped leaves held on fine, creeping stems. Each leaf resembles a tiny circular shield or miniature lotus pad, giving the plant a distinctive, serene aesthetic. As it rambles, it roots readily at the nodes, forming a soft, carpet-like growth ideal for container cultivation. Small, subtle pinkish flowers may appear in warm conditions, though its ornamental value lies primarily in its vivid foliage.

Growing conditions: A tender perennial originating from Asia, Gotu Kola requires protection from cold in Ireland and should be grown indoors, under glass, or in a heated polytunnel. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, preferring consistent moisture, warmth, and a humus-rich substrate that never fully dries out. In the Irish climate it will overwinter only if kept above frost level, making container culture the most reliable approach.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally recognised for its calming qualities, Centella has a long association with easing anxiety, supporting concentration, and quietening an overactive mind. It has also appeared historically in preparations relating to skin health, including acne, due to its reputation for promoting a balanced internal state.

Maintenance & harvesting: Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged, and trim back runners regularly to maintain a tidy, vigorous patch. Warmer conditions will accelerate growth, allowing frequent leaf harvesting; simply clip healthy young leaves as needed, avoiding old or yellowing foliage. In winter, reduce watering and maintain warmth, as cold, wet compost will quickly damage the roots.
