Chelidonium majus plant at Ivywood

Chelidonium majus (Celandine) 9 cm Pot

€ 4.00
A distinctive yellow-flowering herb with deeply cut leaves and bright orange latex, long associated with traditional external use for warts.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Chelidonium majus forms soft mounds of blue-green, lobed foliage with a slightly glaucous sheen. Upright stems carry loose clusters of bright yellow, four-petalled flowers that stand out sharply against the cool-toned leaves. When damaged, the plant exudes a vivid orange sap, a striking feature historically recognised and easily identified in the field.

Growing conditions: A half-hardy annual to short-lived perennial in Irish conditions, Greater Celandine survives mild winters but may die back completely in harsher cold. It tolerates full sun to partial shade and is comfortable in most soil types, provided drainage is adequate. Well suited to the Irish climate, it will often self-seed modestly if allowed to mature, returning in disturbed or semi-wild areas.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally associated with external applications for warts, Chelidonium was also referenced historically for respiratory and gallbladder-related issues. However, it contains potent alkaloids and is considered toxic; it is not suitable for internal use.

Maintenance & harvesting: Wear gloves when handling, as the bright orange latex can stain skin and may cause irritation. Keep the soil lightly moist but not saturated, and avoid excessive feeding, which encourages weak, sappy growth. Deadhead if you wish to limit self-seeding; conversely, leave some seed heads to ripen if you want a naturalised patch. Harvest aerial parts in full flower when required, taking care to avoid contact with eyes or broken skin.
