Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn) 9 cm pot

€ 7.00
A hardy native Irish hawthorn grown from seed collected in the Ivywood woodlands, forming a small tree with finely cut leaves, fragrant blossom, and bright red berries.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Crataegus monogyna is a beautifully structured small tree with dense, thorny branches and deeply lobed, fresh green leaves that emerge early in spring. In May, it produces abundant clusters of creamy white blossom with a sweet, traditional hedgerow fragrance, followed in autumn by glossy red haws. The rugged bark, compact branching, and seasonal shift from flowers to fruit give this species a strong visual presence in both wild and cultivated settings. These plants are grown from seed collected directly in the Ivywood woodlands, ensuring local provenance and strong adaptation to Irish conditions.

Growing conditions: A fully hardy native of Ireland and Europe, hawthorn thrives in full sun to part shade and tolerates a wide range of soils, including heavy clay, limestone, and exposed upland sites. It is exceptionally resilient to wind, cold, and rain, making it one of the most reliable native trees for the Irish climate. Once established, it requires minimal watering and will grow steadily even in less fertile ground.

Traditional & herbal uses: Hawthorn has a long history in European tradition, particularly for supporting the heart and circulation. Blossoms and berries were historically linked with balancing high or low blood pressure, improving circulatory tone, and moderating cholesterol levels. Its long cultural association with heart vitality has made it one of the most recognised woodland medicinal trees.

Maintenance & harvesting: Plant out in well-prepared ground and water during the first growing season until established. Prune lightly in winter to shape or maintain size, avoiding heavy cutting of older wood. For traditional harvesting, gather blossoms in late spring on dry mornings, and collect a portion of the berries after the first frosts when they soften and deepen in colour. Hawthorn supports a rich web of wildlife; leaving some fruit for birds is recommended. Trees grown from Ivywood woodland seed develop strong local resilience and natural hedge-forming ability.
