Filipendula ulmaria plant

Filipendula ulmaria (Meadowsweet) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A graceful Irish native perennial with plume-like creamy blossoms and aromatic foliage, thriving in moist ground and adding strong visual and ecological value to wild-style plantings.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Filipendula ulmaria, commonly known as Meadowsweet, is a handsome, moisture-loving perennial with elegantly toothed leaves and tall, airy plumes of creamy-white flowers. The blooms form dense, frothy clusters that carry a sweet, almond-like fragrance and are highly attractive to pollinators. Its upright stems and soft texture make it a standout plant in wet meadows, stream margins and naturalistic garden settings.

Growing conditions: A fully hardy native Irish species, Meadowsweet thrives in damp, fertile soil and is particularly well suited to areas with consistent moisture such as ditches, pond edges and wet borders. It tolerates both full sun and part shade, though moisture levels are the key determinant of success. In Ireland’s cool, mild climate, it overwinters reliably and emerges strongly each spring.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally associated with gastritis, arthritis, diarrhoea, heart burn and nausea, with flowering tops historically gathered for their aromatic qualities.

Maintenance & harvesting: Cut back old stems in winter once growth has fully died down. Mulching with compost in early spring supports vigorous regrowth, particularly in lighter soils. Meadowsweet spreads gently through rhizomes and can be divided every few years to maintain a healthy stand or control its footprint. Harvest aerial parts when the plant is in full flower, selecting stems before blooms begin to fade. Robust and non-problematic to handle.
