Geranium maculatum plant

Geranium maculatum (American Cranesbill) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A graceful woodland perennial bearing soft pink-lilac flowers and deeply cut foliage, valued for its strong, tannin-rich roots.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Geranium maculatum forms loose, attractive clumps of finely divided, palmately lobed leaves that emerge in spring with a fresh, slightly mottled surface. Upright stems carry delicate pink to lavender flowers, each with broad petals and pronounced veining, creating a classic woodland–meadow aesthetic. As the season progresses, the plant develops its characteristic beak-shaped seed pods, giving rise to the name “cranesbill.”

Growing conditions: A hardy perennial in Ireland, it performs reliably in full sun to light shade, though partial shade most closely resembles its native North American woodland habitat. Irish moisture levels suit it well, but the soil must drain adequately to avoid winter wet around the crown. It tolerates a range of soils, from mildly acidic to neutral, and is well suited to mixed borders, damp meadows, and semi-woodland edges. Plants grown from seed often establish strongly in their second year.

Traditional & herbal uses: Historically used as a strongly astringent herb. Across various traditions it has been linked with digestive irregularities, and its tannin-rich roots were considered useful where a firming action was desired. Aerial parts have also appeared in records relating to seasonal women’s cycles and localised vascular concerns.

Maintenance & harvesting: Keep the area weed-free during spring emergence, as young shoots are delicate. Once established, the plant is resilient and spreads slowly by rhizome. Deadhead if you wish to limit self-seeding, or allow seedpods to mature for naturalised drifts. Roots are typically lifted in late summer to autumn when tannin content is highest—wash carefully, as they can be brittle. After flowering, cut back spent stems to encourage tidy regrowth, and apply a light mulch in winter to protect the crown and stabilise soil moisture.
