Iris Versicolor at the Ivywood gardens

Iris Versicolor (Blue Flag) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A moisture-loving perennial with striking blue-violet blooms and sturdy sword-like foliage. Well suited to damp Irish soils and reliably hardy once established.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Iris versicolor forms elegant fans of upright, sword-shaped leaves and produces vivid blue-violet flowers marked with intricate veining. Its rhizomatous structure allows it to anchor well in damp soils, giving it a bold architectural presence in wet borders, pond margins, and moisture-retentive ground.

Growing conditions: A reliably hardy perennial well suited to the Irish climate, particularly in areas with consistent moisture or naturally heavy soils. It thrives in full sun to part shade and benefits from a site that remains damp throughout the year. Planting into humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil enhances vigour, and established clumps tolerate Irish winters without protection.

Traditional & herbal uses: Currently used in modern herbal practice for its affinity with sluggish digestion and congestive skin presentations. Extracts are often incorporated in formulas targeting digestive discomfort, mild nausea, and skin conditions linked to poor elimination such as acne and chronic eczema. Its use today focuses on gentle stimulation of digestive secretions and supporting overall hepatic–cutaneous balance.

Maintenance & harvesting: Plant rhizomes securely into damp ground and keep free of competing weeds during establishment. Divide mature clumps every few years to maintain flower production and prevent overcrowding. Cut back spent foliage in late autumn once it naturally dies down. Harvesting traditionally focuses on mature rhizomes, taken when the plant is fully dormant and soil conditions allow easy lifting.
