Lactuca virosa potted plant

Lactuca virosa (Wild Lettuce) 9 cm Pot

€ 4.00
A tall biennial with deeply serrated leaves and distinctive milky latex, valued today for its calming, sedative-leaning properties. Well suited to Irish gardens when grown in full sun or light shade and allowed to develop over two seasons.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Lactuca virosa is a striking biennial, rising up to 1.2 m with upright branching stems, bluish-green foliage, and a characteristic bitter latex released when the leaves or stems are cut. As the plant matures in its second year, it forms tall flower spikes carrying small yellow blossoms, followed by pale, feathery seed heads. All plants sold through our nursery are raised from seed here in Co. Clare.

Growing conditions: This species grows reliably in Ireland provided it receives full sun or light filtered shade. Being fully hardy, it overwinters without protection and completes its life cycle in two years. It prefers free-draining soil and benefits from moisture retention during dry spells. Once planted out, it establishes quickly and tolerates exposed sites.

Traditional & herbal uses: Wild Lettuce is currently used in herbal practice for its calming, settling qualities, particularly where restlessness, muscular tension, or trouble winding down are concerns. Its latex-rich aerial parts are the portion of interest and remain popular for non-stimulant soothing support.

Maintenance & harvesting: Allow plants to grow undisturbed through their first year, then harvest aerial parts in the second summer when flowering begins and latex content is highest. Wear gloves when cutting, as the sap can be sticky and irritating to some individuals. Remove spent stems after seed collection to prevent excessive self-seeding. This biennial dies back after its second season but can self-renew if seed is allowed to fall.
