Growth habit & appearance:Persicaria odorata forms a lush mound of lance-shaped, glossy green leaves with a distinctive spicy-citrus aroma. In warm, sheltered conditions it produces trailing stems and dense foliage, giving it a vibrant, tropical look despite its compact size.
Growing conditions:This species is a tender perennial and not frost-hardy in Ireland. At our nursery it thrives under cover in a polytunnel where warmth, humidity, and protection from cold winds allow steady growth. It performs best in full sun with consistently moist but free-draining soil. Outdoors it can be grown during the summer but must be brought inside or into a tunnel before cold nights return.
Traditional & herbal uses:Vietnamese coriander has long been used throughout Southeast Asia for digestive discomfort, particularly flatulence, sluggish digestion, and mild gastrointestinal upset. Peer-reviewed studies note its antimicrobial and antioxidant constituents, with ongoing research evaluating its potential effects on gut microflora and digestive motility. It is also widely used as a culinary herb to lighten rich dishes and support post-meal comfort. To make a true authentic Vietnamese Pho, Vietnamese corriander (ngo gai) is served alongside the dish, where the fresh leaf is chopped and sprinkled on top as a garnish
Maintenance & harvesting:Regular harvesting of young leaves encourages bushier growth. Avoid waterlogging and allow the top layer of compost to dry slightly between waterings. Plants grown under cover benefit from light pruning to keep stems compact. As a tender species, protect from frost by overwintering in a warm indoor space. Taking a cutting in late summer will root very quickly and can be a kept as a small plant indoors for the winter.
