Phytolacca acinosa berries

Phytolacca acinosa (Indian pokeweed) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
Phytolacca acinosa (Indian Pokeweed) – A striking half-hardy perennial with bold panicles of white flowers followed by rich crimson-black berries. Highly ornamental but strongly toxic; grown at Ivywood from seed. Not for internal use.
Description

Growth habit & appearance:Phytolacca acinosa forms a dramatic clump of upright red-tinged stems reaching around 1.5 m, bearing broad, glossy green leaves and tall racemes of white to pale pink flowers that mature into deep purple-black berries. It has a bold architectural presence in the garden and resprouts each year from its crown when protected from harsh winter frosts.

Growing conditions:This species is classed as half-hardy in Ireland and benefits from a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained fertile soil. Plants grown in Co. Clare generally overwinter reliably when mulched, though young shoots need protection from severe frost. As a vigorous Asian perennial, it establishes strongly and may self-seed if fruit is not removed.

Traditional & herbal uses:Indian pokeweed has a long ethnobotanical history but is widely recognised as a toxic plant requiring caution. Historically, various parts were used externally or in tightly controlled preparations. Modern toxicological assessments emphasise the presence of potent triterpenoid saponins and lectins. Leaves are sometimes consumed traditionally **only after being boiled repeatedly and discarded between boils**, but this practice carries substantial risk and is not recommended. The berries are especially poisonous and pose a danger to children and pets, so removal of flowering stems is best to avoid any berries forming...

Maintenance & harvesting:Remove flower spikes before fruiting if you need to prevent self-seeding. Cut stems back after die-back and mulch to protect the crown in winter.

As it is toxic, this plant must be grown responsibly and kept away from children and livestock.
