Plantago major at Ivywood

Plantago major (Plantain) 9 cm Pot

€ 4.00
A hardy native perennial rosette herb valued for soothing irritated sinuses, hayfever-prone noses and minor skin flare-ups.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Plantago major, or greater plantain, forms a low, robust rosette of broad, ribbed leaves that hug the soil surface. Slim upright flower spikes rise through summer, carrying tiny pollen-rich flowers that ripen into neat seed heads. As a native Irish perennial it integrates seamlessly into borders, orchard understories, wilder edges and pollinator corridors, adding quiet structure and dependable greenery throughout the season.

Growing conditions: Perfectly adapted to the Irish climate, this hardy perennial tolerates wind, persistent rain and cool summers. It thrives in full sun to part shade and accepts a wide spectrum of soils—clay, loam or disturbed ground—provided drainage is adequate. As a native Irish and European species it supports local ecology and reliably establishes in low-input gardens. All plants are raised from seed in our nursery in Co. Clare for strong, climate-suited growth.

Traditional & herbal uses: Greater plantain has been valued across Europe for calming irritated mucous membranes and easing upper-respiratory discomforts. The mucilage- and tannin-rich leaves have been used traditionally in cases of sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, hayfever and post-nasal drip, and topically for minor bites, grazes and reactive skin. Modern studies continue to explore its soothing and astringent properties.

Maintenance & harvesting: Plant out firmly and water until established; thereafter it requires minimal care. Remove spent flower spikes to reduce self-seeding or allow them to ripen if naturalising is desired. Leaves can be picked throughout the season—choose clean, undamaged foliage from plants growing away from paths or pets.

Wildlife benefits: Plantago major is an important native resource for Irish wildlife. Its flowers provide accessible pollen for solitary bees and hoverflies, and the seed heads feed finches and other small birds later in the season. The broad leaves act as larval food for several moth species and offer shelter for ground-dwelling invertebrates, making it a valuable addition to pollinator-friendly and biodiversity-focused gardens.
