Reseda luteola or Dyers Weld plant in pot

Reseda luteola (Dyers Weld) 9 cm pot

€ 5.00
A historic dye plant with striking, upright spires of yellow-green flowers, Reseda luteola (Dyer’s Weld) is a hardy biennial long valued for producing one of Europe’s brightest natural yellow dyes. Grown at Ivywood in Co. Clare, it is well suited to Irish soils and reliably self-sows when happy.
Description

Growth habit & appearance:Reseda luteola forms a loose rosette in its first year before sending up tall, slender flowering stems in its second. The flower spikes are packed with delicate yellow-green blossoms, historically prized for yielding the vivid weld dye. Its airy, vertical form makes it visually striking in wilder, herbaceous plantings and it is known to attract a wide range of pollinating insects.

Growing conditions:This hardy biennial thrives in full sun and tolerates most free-draining soils typical of Irish gardens. As a native European species, it copes well with wet winters and cool summers, though it colours and flowers best when given consistent light. Plants grown at Ivywood adapt well outdoors and often self-seed if the soil is left undisturbed.

Traditional & herbal uses:Dyer’s Weld is one of Europe’s oldest dye plants, traditionally used to produce a strong, lightfast yellow pigment. Although not widely used medicinally today, historical texts record occasional external applications and minor folk uses. Its main value remains botanical and cultural: as a dye species, a pollinator resource, and a heritage plant of textile history.

Maintenance & harvesting:Growth is straightforward: allow the first-year rosette to develop, then cut off flowering heads only if you wish to prevent self-seeding. For dye use, leaves, stems, and flowering tops are harvested before seed set, while roots may be lifted in the first year for traditional processing. Biennial in habit; plants die after flowering. Minimal pest issues and highly tolerant of exposure. Handle mature seed pods carefully, as they shatter easily.
