Scutellaria baicalensis at Ivywood nursery

Scutellaria baicalensis (Baikal scullcap) 9 cm Pot

€ 6.00
A compact hardy perennial with blue-violet flowers and distinctive ribbed roots, valued in traditional herbalism for allergy-related conditions and widely used in Asian materia medica.
Description

Growth habit & appearance:Scutellaria baicalensis forms a low, refined clump with narrow lanceolate leaves and upright stems topped with deep blue to violet hooded flowers. Its thick, yellow-tinged roots are the key medicinal part and develop more character as the plant matures. This species supports pollinators in midsummer, drawing in bees and hoverflies that benefit from its nectar-rich blossoms. Grown from seed in our nursery in Co. Clare, it produces robust plants suited to Irish gardens.

Growing conditions:A hardy perennial well suited to Ireland’s cooler climate, Baikal skullcap prefers full sun to light shade and free-draining soil. It dislikes winter wet, so raised beds or gravelly soils improve survival in prolonged wet periods. As a non-native Asian species, it overwinteres reliably here once established, provided young plants are kept weed-free and protected from slug pressure.

Traditional & herbal uses:This root-based herb has a long history of use in East Asian traditions for allergy-related conditions, adrenal fatigue, and high blood pressure. It is also associated with supporting the body during inflammatory skin eruptions such as boils.

Maintenance & harvesting:Keep the soil free of competing weeds, especially in spring when slugs are highly attracted to the young shoots. Water modestly, avoiding saturation. Harvest aerial parts when the plant is in full flower, and lift roots only from mature multi-year plants if desired. Cut back once flowering is finished to maintain shape and vigour.
