Teucrium scoridonia plant

Teucrium scoridonia (Woodsage) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A hardy native Irish perennial with soft grey-green foliage and tall spires of pale yellow-green flowers. Traditionally used for respiratory tract infections, diarrhoea, and as a mouth rinse.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Teucrium scorodonia forms loose, softly textured clumps of downy grey-green leaves on square stems, characteristic of the Lamiaceae. As the season progresses it produces tall, airy flowering spikes carrying pale yellow-green blooms that subtly attract bees, hoverflies, and other woodland-edge pollinators. Its muted tones and open structure blend easily into naturalistic or native plantings, while still providing ecological depth and movement in dappled light.

Growing conditions: A fully hardy perennial native to Ireland and Europe, Wood Sage thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts well to dry, sandy, or stony soils. It is particularly at home in woodland edges, rocky banks, and hedgerow margins, making it extremely reliable across varied Irish landscapes. Its resilience and drought tolerance make it an excellent choice for low-input, ecologically oriented gardens.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally used for respiratory tract infections, diarrhoea, and as a mouthwash, Teucrium scorodonia has a long record in European herbal practice. Its aromatic, resinous foliage was valued for cleansing and protective preparations. Ecologically, it is an important nectar source for woodland pollinators and supports native biodiversity in semi-shaded habitats.

Maintenance & harvesting: Cut back after flowering to maintain a compact form and encourage fresh shoots. The plant self-seeds lightly in suitable ground but is easy to manage. Harvest aerial parts when in full flower, and divide mature clumps if rejuvenation is needed. Once established, it requires minimal care and copes well with dry spells.
