Ocimum tenuiflorum (Tulsi Holy Basil) 9 cm Pot

Growth habit & appearance:Ocimum tenuiflorum, known as Tulsi or Holy Basil, forms a compact, aromatic shrublet with narrow, softly textured leaves that release a warm clove-like scent when brushed. Plants produce deep purple flower spikes through summer, attracting bees and adding a distinct ornamental quality. All plants are seed-raised in our nursery in Co. Clare.

Growing conditions:This half-hardy basil thrives in full sun and warmth, performing best in a sheltered Irish garden, patio, or polytunnel. Plant out only after all risk of frost has passed. Although native to Asia, it adapts well to Irish summers when given protection from wind and cold nights. Removing early flower buds encourages a bushier shape and prolongs leaf production.

Traditional & herbal uses:Tulsi is traditionally valued for supporting stress resilience and helping settle an overactive mind. Contemporary research highlights its potential roles in moderating cortisol responses, improving cognitive focus under fatigue, and offering antioxidant support. Additional studies suggest benefits for mental clarity, tension-related headaches, and mild low mood. These uses relate to its aromatic essential oil profile and phenolic compounds.

Maintenance & harvesting:Pinch back growing tips regularly to maintain a compact shape and maximise leaf quality. Harvest leaves throughout summer, preferably in the morning when essential oil content is highest. Protect from cold; Tulsi declines rapidly below 8°C, so pots can be moved indoors toward autumn. Save mature seed heads for re-sowing, and provide good airflow to avoid mildew. Handle delicately to avoid bruising the aromatic leaves.
