Bistorta officinalis or Snakeroot plant in pot

Bistorta officinalis (Snakeroot) 9 cm pot

€ 6.00
A hardy perennial with striking pink flower spikes and strong traditional uses for digestive and astringent support. A vigorous plant suited to Irish gardens.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Bistorta officinalis, also known as Snakeroot or Common Bistort, forms dense clumps of rich green, oval leaves with a slightly crinkled texture. In summer it sends up tall, slender stems topped with tight pink flower spikes that are highly attractive to bees and hoverflies. Its bold foliage and distinct inflorescences give it strong visual presence in damp meadows or garden borders.

Growing conditions: This hardy perennial thrives in the Irish climate, particularly in full sun or light shade with moisture-retentive soil. It is naturally vigorous and can spread strongly, so choose a site where its robust growth will be welcomed or contained. Once established, it tolerates cool summers, wet winters, and typical Irish rainfall with ease.

Traditional & herbal uses: Bistort has a long history of use across Europe for its powerful astringent qualities. The young leaves have been used for mouth and throat irritations, while root preparations were traditionally applied to internal and external bleeding or diarrhoea. It remains one of the best-known astringent meadow herbs of the northern temperate regions.

Maintenance & harvesting: Little maintenance is required beyond giving it space to spread or lifting and dividing if it becomes overcrowded. Harvest young leaves in spring when tender, and gather roots when the plant becomes dormant in late autumn or winter. Mulching each spring helps maintain soil moisture and supports vigorous regrowth.
