Chamaemelum nobile (Roman chamomile) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A finely textured, aromatic ground-hugging perennial with soft feathery foliage and creamy daisy flowers, long associated with calming and soothing traditional uses.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Chamaemelum nobile forms a low, dense carpet of finely divided, apple-scented foliage that releases fragrance with the slightest touch. Its soft green leaves create a velvety mat, from which arise delicate white daisies with warm yellow centres. The plant’s compact stature and fern-like texture give it a gentle, restful visual quality, especially when grown in groups where the aromatic foliage can be fully appreciated.

Growing conditions: A hardy perennial native to Ireland and Europe, Roman chamomile thrives outdoors in Irish climates. It tolerates full sun to light shade and prefers free-draining soil that is not overly rich. Damp winters do not usually trouble it, but prolonged waterlogging can weaken the roots. Once established, it spreads slowly to form a low mat, making it well suited for edging, pathways, or herb beds.

Traditional & herbal uses: Historically valued as a calming herb, Roman chamomile has long been associated with easing stress, supporting restful sleep, and soothing nervous agitation. It has also featured in traditional preparations aimed at digestive comfort, including colitis and general nervous digestive complaints, reflecting its reputation as a gentle, comforting aromatic.

Maintenance & harvesting: Maintenance is minimal: keep weeds from invading the low mat, water during prolonged dry spells, and avoid heavy fertilisers that lead to lax, weak growth. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a compact form and encourage fresh, aromatic foliage. Harvest leaves and flowering tops as needed, picking in dry weather for best quality. Although non-toxic, store all harvested herb material safely and clearly labelled.
