Cynara scolymus plant at Ivywood nursery

Cynara scolymus (Globe Artichoke) 9 cm Pot

€ 6.00
A striking perennial with bold silvery leaves and sculptural flower buds, traditionally valued in Europe for supporting digestion, cholesterol balance, and metabolic health.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Cynara scolymus forms a dramatic clump of huge, deeply lobed, silver-green leaves that radiate outward in an architectural rosette. The plant’s most iconic feature is its large, sculptural flower buds—tight, armoured globes that later open into vivid purple thistle flowers if not harvested. Its stature, colour, and texture combine to create a powerful ornamental and culinary presence that dominates the summer garden.

Growing conditions: A hardy perennial originating from Mediterranean Europe, the globe artichoke thrives in full sun and free-draining soil. In Ireland, it performs reliably when planted in a warm, open position sheltered from excessive winter wet. A mulch of compost in spring helps retain moisture while keeping the crown slightly raised above saturated ground. With proper drainage, it is long-lived and vigorous even in cool summers.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally, artichoke leaf has been linked with supporting healthy cholesterol, easing digestive discomfort such as GERD-type symptoms, and encouraging balanced blood sugar and metabolism. Its long history in European herbal and culinary traditions centres on its strong bitter principles and liver-associated folklore.

Maintenance & harvesting: Provide ample space, as mature plants grow wide and tall. Water during prolonged dry periods but avoid waterlogging the crown. Harvest leaves through the growing season as needed, selecting firm, healthy foliage. Buds may be picked before they open, or left to develop into striking purple flowers. Cut plants back in late autumn and remove old stems to maintain good airflow. Division of established clumps every few years rejuvenates growth and helps maintain yield.
