Dianthus superbus plant

Dianthus superbus (Qu Mai)

€ 6.00
A delicate, finely fringed perennial with highly scented summer blooms, long valued in East Asian and European tradition for urinary and digestive applications.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Dianthus superbus is a graceful, clump-forming perennial with slender blue-green leaves and tall, airy flowering stems. Its finely cut, lace-like petals give each bloom a soft, feathery texture, ranging from pale pink to deeper rose tones. The flowers release a sweet, spicy fragrance that drifts on warm air, and their intricate fringing makes them one of the most visually striking of all Dianthus species. The plant brings both delicacy and colour to borders, wildflower areas, and medicinal beds.

Growing conditions: A hardy perennial native to Europe and Asia, Dianthus superbus is well suited to the Irish climate. It thrives in full sun to light shade and prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Damp, heavy ground can stunt growth, so raised areas or gravel-amended beds improve performance. Plants tolerate cool, wet weather but flower best in warm summers. Leave seed heads in autumn if natural self-seeding is desired.

Traditional & herbal uses: Known in Chinese traditional medicine as Qu Mai, this species has been historically associated with supporting urinary tract function, cystitis, digestive stimulation, and the easing of urinary stones or sluggish digestion. It also features in older European herbals under similar uses.

Maintenance & harvesting: Deadhead regularly to encourage a longer flowering season, unless seed collection or self-seeding is intended. Divide mature clumps every few years to maintain vigour and increase stock. Harvest aerial parts during peak bloom if required. Keep weeds down around the crown, water during extended dry periods, and trim back spent stems in late autumn. Plants respond well to light mulching in spring without smothering the crown.
