Vitex agnus castus at Ivywood

Vitex agnus castus (Chasteberry Tree) 9 cm Pot

€ 7.00
A striking aromatic shrub with slender, tapered flower spikes and deeply cut foliage, Vitex agnus-castus is a hardy, sun-loving medicinal shrub valued today for its evidence-backed hormonal-regulating properties.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Vitex agnus-castus develops into an elegant, multi-stemmed shrub with narrow, palmate leaves that release a clean, resinous scent when handled. Long wands of soft lilac flowers rise above the canopy in late summer, providing significant nectar for bees and hoverflies. Mature plants form an airy, open structure reaching around 1.8 m in Irish conditions. All plants are grown from seed in our nursery in Co. Clare.

Growing conditions: This species is fully hardy and performs reliably in Ireland when given a warm, sheltered, south-facing position with full sun and free-draining soil. Its Mediterranean origin means it responds well to heat but tolerates cool, wet winters once established. As a perennial shrub, it overwinters without protection and gradually increases its flowering output year-on-year. It will need a warm sheltered position to produce flowers however rarely produces berries outdoors in Ireland.

Traditional & herbal uses: Vitex has moved far beyond its historical reputation; current herbal practice draws heavily on modern research exploring its effects on pituitary-mediated hormonal regulation. Several peer-reviewed studies (including randomised, placebo-controlled trials) demonstrate benefits for menstrual irregularity, cyclical breast discomfort, PMS/PMT symptoms, and mild hormonal acne. Contemporary use focuses on cycle regulation, luteal-phase support, and promoting hormonal balance rather than older folkloric applications. Its berries, rich in iridoid glycosides (agnuside, aucubin), appear central to its endocrine-modulating profile.

Maintenance & harvesting: Once planted in a sunny, sheltered spot, Vitex requires minimal care. Light pruning in late winter helps maintain a compact form and encourages stronger flowering stems. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, as regrowth can be slow. Mulching in spring supports moisture retention, though overly rich soils should be avoided to prevent weak, lanky growth. Berries are typically collected in late autumn when fully ripe and aromatic.
