Liatris spicata from Ivywood Nursery

Liatris spicata (Gayfeather) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A striking prairie perennial with tall purple flower spikes and grass-like foliage. Well suited to Irish gardens, supports pollinators, and valued today for its soothing respiratory and menstrual applications.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Liatris spicata forms dense clumps of narrow, linear leaves and sends up vertical flowering spikes packed with vibrant purple florets, blooming from the top downward. Its upright architecture and feathery texture give strong visual impact in borders, and the plant is known for reliably attracting bees and butterflies.

Growing conditions: This hardy perennial performs well in Ireland when placed in full sun and planted into free-draining soil. Although native to North American prairie habitats, it adapts well to Irish conditions provided it is not waterlogged over winter. Once established, it tolerates periods of summer dryness but benefits from consistent moisture during early growth.

Traditional & herbal uses: In contemporary herbal practice, Liatris is used primarily for its mild diuretic and toning effects, with applications in supporting menstrual comfort, easing pelvic congestion, and soothing irritated throats. Its gentle respiratory support and general calming actions are the main reasons it remains in use today.

Maintenance & harvesting: Keep the plant weed-free in its first year for strong crown development. Divide mature clumps every few years to maintain vigour and increase stock. Rhizomes can be harvested when the plant is dormant, while flowering stems may be cut for drying. Remove spent flower spikes to prolong the floral display and cut back dead foliage fully in winter.
