Mentha haplocalyx (Bo He)

Mentha haplocalyx (Bo He) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
Mentha haplocalyx (Bo He) is a vigorous, aromatic mint valued for its cooling scent and bright green foliage. Grown in our Co. Clare nursery, it thrives in Irish gardens when contained to prevent spreading.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Mentha haplocalyx (Bo He) forms dense, upright clumps of vivid green, serrated leaves with a strong, cooling aroma that intensifies when handled. Its square stems and soft-textured foliage reflect its Lamiaceae family traits, while slender spikes of pale lilac flowers appear in mid- to late summer. This species grows vigorously, producing a lush, highly aromatic canopy ideal for sensory gardens or productive herb beds.

Growing conditions: Well suited to the Irish climate, this hardy perennial grows reliably outdoors and appreciates full sun, though it tolerates partial shade. In Ireland it performs strongly in moist, fertile soil and spreads rapidly via creeping roots, so containment is advised. All our plants are raised from divisions in our Co. Clare nursery and establish quickly when planted out. As with most mints, it overwinters easily and re-emerges with force each spring.

Traditional & herbal uses: Bo He is widely used in East Asian herbal traditions for soothing sore throats, easing coughs, and supporting relief from fevers. Its aromatic compounds are valued for cooling irritated mucous membranes, and preparations are commonly used for inflammation of the eyes, mouth ulcers, and digestive discomfort. The plant’s essential oils—particularly menthol—contribute to its recognised refreshing, clearing, and soothing properties across modern herbal practice.

Maintenance & harvesting: Containment is essential, as Mentha haplocalyx spreads aggressively through rhizomes. Grow in pots, baskets, or root barriers to prevent takeover of surrounding beds. Cut back worn stems after flowering to encourage strong regrowth. Harvest young leaves before flowering for the highest aromatic quality. Divide mature clumps every 2–3 years to maintain vigour.
