Rose-scented Pelargonium gravolens is a tender perennial from our Co. Clare nursery, grown for its rich, uplifting fragrance and use in, baths and skin-care blends.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Pelargonium gravolens Rose is a strongly aromatic, tender perennial geranium with soft, slightly fuzzy green leaves that release a rich rose fragrance whenever they are brushed or picked. Plants form a branching, upright mound to around 1.2 m, producing sprays of delicate pink flowers through the warmer months that draw the eye and nose in equal measure. Each plant is propagated in our nursery, giving you a well-rooted specimen ready to establish quickly once potted on or planted in a suitable, sheltered spot.

Growing conditions: This Pelargonium thrives in full sun to light partial shade in Ireland, where a bright windowsill, greenhouse, polytunnel or a warm, sheltered patio is ideal. As a tender perennial it will not tolerate hard frost, so it is best grown in pots that can be moved under cover for winter. Use a free-draining compost, avoid waterlogging, and provide some protection from persistent Atlantic winds to keep the scented foliage lush and intact.

Traditional & herbal uses: Rose-scented Pelargonium leaves are widely used in herbal teas and bath blends intended to support relaxation, lift low mood and ease day-to-day stress. The essential oil from related varieties is frequently included in aromatherapy blends for nervous tension, restlessness and sleep support, and in topical preparations aimed at balancing combination or blemish-prone skin. In folk and contemporary herbal practice the fragrant leaves are also added to mixes used around pre-menstrual and menopausal transitions, where a calming, gently uplifting aroma is valued.

Maintenance & harvesting: In Ireland, keep Pelargonium gravolens Rose in a pot with good drainage, watering sparingly and allowing the top of the compost to dry slightly between waterings to prevent root problems. Pinch out growing tips in spring and early summer to encourage a fuller, bushier plant and more leaf material for harvest. Remove any dead or yellowing foliage promptly and reshape lightly after flowering; stronger pruning is best done in late winter under cover. Harvest leaves regularly through the growing season for fresh use or drying, taking small amounts from across the plant so it can rebound quickly. Before the first frosts, move plants into a bright, cool indoor space or polytunnel and reduce watering over winter, then top-dress with compost in spring to keep them productive for many seasons.
