Growth habit & appearance: Lobelia inflata forms a compact annual mound with soft, pale-green leaves and distinctive balloon-like pods that give the plant its characteristic texture. Its tiny violet-white flowers are understated but botanically striking, especially when set against the inflated capsules that follow. Although small in stature, it produces a surprising density of aerial material across the season.

Growing conditions: As a tender annual, it requires warmth and shelter in the Irish climate, thriving best in a sunny position or inside a polytunnel. Plants benefit from consistently moist, free-draining soil and protection from cold spells. All stock is seed-raised in our Co. Clare nursery, and because the species is not frost tolerant, it is typically planted out only during reliably warm months. Not a native plant, but performs well outdoors in summer when temperatures are stable.

Traditional & herbal uses: Lobelia inflata continues to be used by herbal practitioners for respiratory support, particularly where tight, constricted breathing patterns are present. It is frequently included in contemporary formulations aimed at easing chest tightness or supporting people reducing tobacco use. Only very small amounts are employed due to the plant’s potency.

Maintenance & harvesting: Keep plants evenly watered and weed-free, especially during early establishment. Harvest the aerial parts in full flower, ideally wearing gloves as the plant can be mildly irritant when handled. Remove spent plants at the end of the season and collect seed once pods dry and turn light brown. As a tender annual, it does not overwinter and must be resown each year.
