Ornithogalum umbellatum at Ivywood woodland

Ornithogalum umbellatum (Star of Bethlehem) 9 cm Pot

€ 7.00
tar of Bethlehem (Ornithogalum umbellatum) is a graceful bulb-forming perennial with star-white spring flowers, famously used in Bach Flower preparations.
Description

Growth habit & appearance:Ornithogalum umbellatum forms compact clumps of bright green, grass-like foliage arising from offsetting bulbs. In late spring it produces elegant, six-petalled white flowers arranged in loose umbels, each bloom opening only in bright light, giving the plant its “Star of Bethlehem” name. Its tidy growth habit and luminous flowers make it a striking woodland-edge species.

Growing conditions:This is a fully hardy European perennial, and in Ireland it performs reliably outdoors. It prefers light shade to full shade, thriving in humus-rich, moisture-retentive soils typical of Irish woodland gardens. Because it naturalises readily, it is well suited to long-term planting in beds where bulbs can overwinter undisturbed. All plants are propagated in our nursery in Co. Clare and adapt well to Irish rainfall patterns.

Traditional & herbal uses:Historically referenced in European herbal traditions, Star of Bethlehem is best known for its use in Bach Flower preparations, where it is associated with emotional recovery and shock. Beyond this, the plant does not have a strong record in internal herbal practice, and its bulbs contain compounds that require caution. It is therefore used primarily in non-ingested energetic or flower-essence contexts rather than conventional herbal preparations.

Maintenance & harvesting:Bulbs can be lifted and divided during dormancy to increase stock or to prevent excessive spread, as Ornithogalum can naturalise readily. Mulching with leaf mould or compost helps maintain soil moisture and bulb health. Handle bulbs with care due to naturally occurring glycosides present in the Liliaceae family—avoid ingestion. Flowering stems can be removed once spent to conserve energy in the bulbs for the next season.
