Salvia rubra at Ivywood nursery

Salvia rubra (Red Sage) 9 cm Pot

€ 7.00
Hardy perennial sage with deep red flower spikes, valued in traditional herbalism for throat and respiratory complaints.
Description

Growth habit & appearance:Salvia rubra forms an upright, bushy mound with aromatic purple-green leaves and distinctive rich red blossoms held on vertical flowering stems. Its dense foliage texture contrasts well with its vivid inflorescences, and as a true Lamiaceae species it carries the familiar square stems and softly resinous scent. When established, it becomes a reliable feature plant that draws pollinating insects, especially solitary bees and hoverflies.

Growing conditions:This is a hardy perennial well suited to the Irish climate and grown from cuttings in our nursery. It thrives in full sun with free-draining soil and handles coastal exposure reasonably well. Once rooted out, it overwinters reliably in most parts of Ireland, though very waterlogged sites should be avoided to prevent crown rot. Being a European species, it adapts readily to cool, damp springs and benefits from good air movement.

Traditional & herbal uses:Traditionally used for sore throats, respiratory tract irritation, and its general antiseptic qualities. Red sage has also been used to help reduce excessive sweating. Leaves may be harvested during the growing season for drying or fresh use.

Maintenance & harvesting:Plant out in a bright, well-drained site and keep clear of competing weeds for the first season to help rooting. Harvest leaves as needed, ideally before flowering for best aroma. After flowering, cut back lightly to encourage a compact shape and stronger regrowth the following year. Avoid heavy winter pruning; wait until spring when new buds are visible. The flowers are highly attractive to pollinators, supporting local bee populations. Avoid prolonged wet conditions around the base!
