Growth habit & appearance:Sambucus nigra is a fast-growing, multi-stemmed shrub with a naturally branching, arching habit. It produces broad umbels of creamy-white flowers in early summer, followed by heavy clusters of deep purple-black berries. As a native Irish species, it plays a major ecological role—its flowers feed pollinating insects, its berries sustain birds well into autumn, and its dense structure provides valuable shelter for wildlife. The foliage is finely toothed and strongly aromatic when crushed, making it an instantly recognisable hedgerow species.
Growing conditions:This hardy perennial shrub thrives in full sun or partial shade, tolerating a broad range of Irish soils, including damp, heavy ground that many garden plants struggle with. Being native, it is exceptionally weather-resilient, handling Atlantic winds and high rainfall easily. For best fruiting, choose a bright, open position. All plants offered are grown from seed in our nursery and fully hardened-off and well suited to planting anywhere in Ireland.
Traditional & herbal uses:European elder has a long history of use for easing respiratory catarrh, sinus congestion, feverish states, and viral-type seasonal complaints. The flowers and berries have featured in traditional herbal preparations for supporting the upper respiratory tract. Beyond its medicinal heritage, elder enhances ecological diversity by feeding insects, birds, and beneficial organisms throughout multiple seasons.
Maintenance & harvesting:Plant out in fertile soil and mulch lightly to retain moisture. Elder responds well to pruning; cutting back older stems encourages fresher, more productive growth, though heavy pruning will delay flowering for a season. Harvest flower heads on dry mornings in early summer and berries only when fully ripe and deep black.
