Solidago virgurea at Ivywood

Solidago virgurea (golden rod) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A compact, native Irish goldenrod with bright yellow flower spikes and strong ecological value. A fully hardy perennial, it performs exceptionally well in Irish conditions.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Solidago virgaurea forms upright stems topped with dense sprays of golden-yellow florets, creating a vibrant late-summer display distinctive within the Asteraceae. Its leaves are lanceolate and slightly toothed, forming a neat basal rosette before flowering shoots rise to around 40 cm. As a native Irish and European species, it provides excellent ecological support—its nectar and pollen are highly attractive to bees, hoverflies, and late-season pollinators that rely on dependable floral resources.

Growing conditions: This fully hardy perennial is naturally suited to Irish climates, thriving in full sun to partial shade and tolerating a wide range of soils provided they drain well. As a native plant, it integrates seamlessly into Irish garden ecosystems and remains resilient through winter. All plants are grown from seed in our nursery.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally used for kidney infections, kidney stones, sore throats, allergies and diarrhoea, Goldenrod has an extensive history of European use. Beyond its herbal significance, it contributes substantially to ecological health by acting as a key nectar source during late summer, supporting insects heading into the colder months.

Maintenance & harvesting: Maintenance is straightforward: keep the soil moderately moist during establishment, then allow the plant to settle into its natural rhythm. Cut back stems after flowering to promote tidy growth and encourage next year’s vigour. Seed can be collected once flower heads dry and fluff forms. Harvest whole aerial parts when the plant is in full flower.
