Scutellaria barbata plant

Scutellaria barbata (Skullcap Barbat) 9 cm Pot

€ 6.00
Scutellaria barbata is a compact, perennial with delicate purple blooms, grown from seed and cuttings in our nursery. A resilient medicinal species, it forms a tidy clump and is fully hardy and well suited to Irish growing conditions.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Scutellaria barbata forms a low, branching perennial mat with slender square stems and neat, lanceolate leaves typical of the Lamiaceae. Its small lavender-violet flowers appear in loose clusters, each bloom displaying the characteristic “skullcap” hood that gives the genus its name. The plant has a clean, herbaceous texture and a quietly ornamental presence, attracting pollinating insects and contributing to ecological diversity in mixed borders.

Growing conditions: Fully hardy and well adapted to Irish conditions, this perennial thrives in full sun to partial shade with free-draining but moisture-retentive soil. Originating from Asia but long cultivated in temperate gardens, it remains compact at around 30 cm tall and grows reliably outdoors across Ireland. All plants are propagated from seed or cuttings at our nursery in Co. Clare. We ship within Ireland only.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally valued for indications related to oedema, jaundice, mastitis, and appendicitis, Scutellaria barbata has a long record in East Asian herbal systems. Its aerial parts have been used to support fluid balance and general systemic resilience. Ecologically, the nectar-rich flowers offer modest support for small solitary bees and hoverflies, enhancing biodiversity wherever it is planted.

Maintenance & harvesting: This is a low-maintenance perennial: keep weeds down in the first year, provide moderate watering during prolonged dry spells, and cut back after flowering to maintain a compact habit. Seed can be saved from mature flower spikes once fully dry. Harvest the whole aerial parts at peak bloom for best quality. Handle with care, as Scutellaria species can be moderately irritant to sensitive individuals. Plants overwinter naturally outdoors and return strongly each spring.
