Viola tricolor in flower

Viola tricolor (Heartsease) 9 cm Pot

€ 4.00
Small yet botanically rich annual valued for its vivid tricolour blooms and long-standing therapeutic relevance, particularly for inflammatory and pruritic skin conditions.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Viola tricolor forms a compact, low-growing annual mat, typically no more than 10 cm tall, with slender branching stems and distinctive purple-yellow-white flowers that persist over a long season. The blooms are highly attractive to solitary bees and early pollinators, contributing meaningfully to local ecological networks. This species is one of Ireland’s native wild pansies, historically abundant in meadows and field margins, and remains a key component of traditional European ethnobotany.

Growing conditions: As a hardy annual native to Ireland, Viola tricolor thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates light, poor, or disturbed soils. It germinates readily when sown directly outdoors and is well suited to Ireland’s cool, humid climate, continuing to flower through unsettled summers. Plants may self-seed prolifically if allowed to mature, helping sustain small naturalised patches year after year.

Traditional & herbal uses: Heartsease has a long clinical history across Europe for pruritic, eczematous, and weeping skin conditions, supported by its content of salicylates, flavonoids, and mucilage. Contemporary research continues to investigate its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity, particularly in relation to atopic dermatitis and impetigo. In modern herbal practice it remains a go-to plant for irritated, inflamed skin, childhood eczema, and persistent itch, while also featuring in traditional formulations for respiratory complaints such as whooping cough. Its broad ecological profile and phytochemical diversity make it one of the most versatile small native medicinals.

Maintenance & harvesting: As an annual, Viola tricolor completes its life cycle within one growing season and benefits from regular dead-heading to prolong flowering. Seed can be collected once pods dry and begin to split. Plants transplant easily and can be lifted or divided while still small if required. Harvest aerial parts during peak flowering for best quality. As it self-seeds freely, remove spent plants if you wish to control spread.
