Digitalis purpurea plant at Ivywood

Digitalis purpurea (Foxglove) 9 cm Pot

€ 4.00
A tall, dramatic biennial with towering spires of tubular bells. Highly ornamental but extremely toxic; historically referenced for cardiac-related uses.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Digitalis purpurea forms a low rosette of soft, downy, grey-green leaves in its first year. In the second year it sends up strong, stately flower spikes lined with hooded tubular bells in shades of purple, rose or white, each speckled inside with dark markings. Its height and vertical structure make it a classic woodland and cottage-garden presence, drawing bees into its deep, nectar-filled flowers while giving borders a tall architectural accent.

Growing conditions: A hardy biennial native to Europe and perfectly adapted to Irish conditions, foxglove thrives in full sun or partial shade, particularly in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil. It self-seeds readily in woodland margins, hedge-lines and semi-wild areas, making it long-lasting in naturalistic plantings. Cool, damp summers suit it well, and it tolerates wind exposure typical of many Irish gardens.

Traditional & herbal uses: Historically, Digitalis purpurea was associated with cardiac conditions and appears frequently in older European medical texts. The plant contains potent cardiac glycosides and is extremely poisonous; references to traditional use are historical only. Not suitable for ingestion or internal application under any circumstances.

Maintenance & harvesting: Plant out in its first year to allow the rosette to establish. Remove competing weeds and mulch lightly to retain moisture without smothering the crown. Once flowering is complete, allow some seed heads to ripen if you want the plant to self-seed and return naturally. Otherwise, deadhead to control spread. Biennial plants die after their second year but often leave seedlings behind.
