Lycopus europaeus plant in pot

Lycopus europaeus (Gipsywort) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A moisture-loving perennial with dark green, lanceolate leaves and upright stems, ideal for damp Irish soils. Traditionally used for palpitations and thyroid-related complaints.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Lycopus europaeus forms clean vertical stands of square mint-family stems, clothed in sharply toothed dark-green leaves. In summer it produces tight whorls of pale flowers at each leaf joint, giving the plant a distinctive tiered structure. It is native to Ireland’s wetter habitats, and when grown in a garden setting it brings a quietly architectural presence while supporting damp-soil biodiversity.

Growing conditions: As a native hardy perennial, it is fully adapted to Ireland’s cool summers and high rainfall. It thrives in consistently moist or boggy ground, pond margins, or any soil that never fully dries. Full sun or part shade are equally suitable. Once established it spreads via creeping rhizomes, so allow space or contain it if you prefer a tighter planting. All plants are propagated in our Co. Clare nursery from seed or division and are robust for outdoor cultivation.

Traditional & herbal uses: Modern phytochemical analysis shows Lycopus species contain lithospermic acids, rosmarinic acid, and related phenolics that demonstrate mild cardio-calming and thyroid-modulating effects in clinical contexts. Extracts have been investigated for supporting benign palpitations, functional anxiety with sympathetic overactivation, and low-grade feverish states. European studies also reference its potential to reduce excessive thyroid hormone output in mild hyperthyroid patterns, though potency is considered modest and research remains ongoing.

Maintenance & harvesting: Plant out into reliably damp soil and keep the root zone weed-free in the first season. Growth becomes vigorous from year two; dividing clumps every 3–4 years maintains vitality and prevents dominance over neighbouring plants. Harvest aerial parts when flower whorls are fully developed, typically mid to late summer. Cut stems cleanly above the woody base to encourage regrowth. Plants die back over winter and return strongly each spring.
