Polemonium caeruleum plant

Polemonium caeruleum (Jacobs ladder) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A hardy perennial with elegant blue, bell-shaped flowers and a long history of traditional use as an expectorant herb. Easy to grow in Irish gardens and highly attractive to pollinators.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Polemonium caeruleum forms neat clumps of ladder-like, pinnate foliage topped with loose sprays of nodding, sky-blue bells. Its upright but graceful architecture makes it visually striking in borders, while the nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees, hoverflies and early summer pollinators. All plants are grown from seed in our nursery in Co. Clare.

Growing conditions: A fully hardy perennial well suited to the Irish climate, thriving in full sun to part shade with consistent moisture. As a native European woodland-edge species, it performs reliably in Irish gardens and tolerates cool, wet springs. Plant out into fertile, humus-rich soil and mulch lightly to conserve moisture.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally valued as an expectorant and mild diaphoretic, Jacob’s Ladder has been recorded in European materia medica for supporting chest congestion and easing tight, irritated airways. Historically the aerial parts were used for their gentle astringent properties and occasional use in soothing inflammatory conditions.

Maintenance & harvesting: Harvest aerial parts during peak flowering for best quality. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continued flowering and prevent unnecessary self-seeding. Cut back foliage after flowering to maintain compact growth. Mulch annually with compost to support vigour, especially in wetter Irish winters.
