Polygonum multiflorum (He Shou Wu) 9 cm Pot

€ 7.00
A vigorous, twining perennial climber grown for its culturally significant root and glossy foliage. Traditionally valued in East Asian herbalism, He Shou Wu is a strong, fast-growing plant that thrives in sheltered Irish gardens or polytunnels.
Description

Growth habit & appearance:Polygonum multiflorum, commonly known as He Shou Wu, is a powerful, woody perennial climber capable of reaching several metres in a season. It produces heart-shaped leaves, red-tinged new growth, and long twining stems that readily scramble over supports. Mature plants develop substantial underground rootstocks, which are the traditional medicinal part. In late summer, airy clusters of cream-white flowers appear, providing an attractive nectar resource for pollinating insects. Its dense foliage also offers shelter for beneficial garden arthropods.

Growing conditions:This species is hardy in most Irish gardens when given a warm, sheltered position and moderately fertile, moisture-retentive soil. It performs well in full sun but tolerates part shade, particularly in the west of Ireland where summers are cooler. As a vigorous climber, it requires a sturdy trellis, arch, or fence. Being a long-lived perennial, it overwinters reliably once established, though young plants benefit from protection from harsh, persistent winter wet.

Traditional & herbal uses:He Shou Wu holds a long history of use in East Asian traditions, particularly for maintaining vitality and supporting healthy ageing. Modern phytochemical research notes its content of stilbenes, anthraquinones, and flavonoids, which are investigated for antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and lipid-modulating activity. It is best known in Chinese Traditional Medicine (TCM) for supporting healthy hair pigmentation and as a general tonic herb.

Maintenance & harvesting:This is a fast and heavy grower, so regular tying-in and structural support are essential. Mulch annually to maintain soil moisture and promote root development. Harvesting typically focuses on mature roots from older plants once the crown is well-developed, while leaves may be gathered sparingly during summer. The plant contains compounds that should not be ingested raw. Its strong growth can overshadow weaker plants, so periodic pruning helps maintain balance in mixed plantings.
