Vinca major on flower

Vinca major (Periwinkle) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
Vigorous, hardy evergreen perennial with glossy foliage and large violet-blue flowers. Historically used to reduce heavy bleeding and still referenced today for astringent, haemostatic and circulatory-toning actions.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Vinca major is an evergreen, ground-covering perennial with trailing stems and broad, glossy, dark green leaves. Its large violet-blue five-petalled flowers appear from spring through autumn, providing extended nectar for bees and hoverflies when other woodland-edge plants are quiet. The plant’s dense mat-forming habit stabilises soil and suppresses weeds, making it ecologically valuable on sloping or shaded ground where competition is poor.

Growing conditions: A fully hardy perennial well suited to Irish conditions, Greater Periwinkle thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It tolerates coastal wind, shade from trees, and lean soils. Once established it spreads steadily, so planting should be deliberate in borders but is ideal for banks, woodland edges and erosion-prone areas.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally used for heavy periods, nosebleeds and haemorrhoids, Vinca major has a strong astringent and vasoconstrictive profile. Modern herbal sources continue to reference its haemostatic effects, largely attributed to its alkaloids, tannins and circulatory-toning constituents. While not widely used internally today due to its potent chemistry, it remains of academic interest in vascular research, with several peer-reviewed studies examining vincamine-type alkaloids for microcirculatory support and cerebral blood-flow modulation. Topically, its astringent nature aligns with traditional uses for minor bleeding and tissue tightening. Ecologically, its long flowering window supports a range of pollinators in shaded habitats.

Maintenance & harvesting: Cut back wandering stems to control spread and maintain shape. Harvest aerial parts when in full flower if required. It thrives with minimal care once rooted, though occasional thinning helps prevent excessive matting. Avoid overfeeding, as richer soil encourages overly aggressive growth. Pruning after winter keeps the plant compact and vigorous for the season ahead.
