Wild strawberry at Ivywood

Fragaria vesca (Wild strawberry) 9 cm Pot

€ 4.00
A low, spreading woodland perennial with delicate trifoliate leaves and small fragrant berries, forming a charming edible groundcover ideal for Irish gardens.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Fragaria vesca, the Wild Strawberry, is a compact perennial that forms a carpet of soft green trifoliate leaves held on fine runners. In spring it produces dainty white five-petalled flowers, followed by small but intensely aromatic red berries. Its creeping habit allows it to weave naturally through borders, paths and woodland edges, giving a soft, naturalised appearance.

Growing conditions: Fully hardy and native to Ireland, Wild Strawberry thrives in full sun to light shade and adapts well to most soils, provided they are not waterlogged. It performs especially well in Irish woodland gardens and semi-shaded edges where moisture is retained. In sunnier spots it fruits heavily, while shaded areas encourage lush leaf growth.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally associated with diarrhoea, sore throats, gout and arthritis. Leaves, roots and fruits have been valued in various folk traditions for their astringent qualities.

Maintenance & harvesting: A very low-maintenance plant that spreads steadily by runners; simply allow it to naturalise or lift and replant runners to increase coverage. Harvest ripe berries throughout summer. Leaves can be collected during the growing season but should be taken sparingly to avoid weakening the plant. Cutting back old foliage in late winter encourages a clean flush of new spring growth.
