Nepeta cataria plant at Ivywood

Nepeta cataria (Catnip) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A highly aromatic hardy perennial with soft grey-green foliage and white flower spikes. Traditionally valued for easing tension and supporting digestive comfort.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Nepeta cataria forms a loose, tall bushy mound of soft grey-green, downy leaves rich in volatile oils that release a distinct citrus-mint aroma when brushed. Slender stems carry airy white to pale-mauve flower spikes that attract bees throughout summer. This species retains its wild character—open, natural and lightly sprawling—making it visually appealing in medicinal beds and pollinator plantings.

Growing conditions: A fully hardy perennial well adapted to Irish conditions, thriving in full sun to light shade. It prefers free-draining soil, tolerating poor or rocky ground, and is drought-tolerant once mature. Plants grown outdoors in Co. Clare perform reliably year-round, with winter die-back followed by strong spring regrowth. As a native European species, its cold tolerance suits all parts of Ireland.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally associated with easing stress, tension and restlessness, catnip has a long record of use for digestive discomfort, mild cramping and infant colic. Its aromatic compounds have been studied for gentle calming effects, as well as their relevance in supporting sleep onset. Additional uses include support for IBS-type symptoms and low-grade fevers.

Maintenance & harvesting: Cut back plants by half in midsummer to maintain vigour and encourage a fresh flush of growth. Harvest whole aerial parts when in full flower, or use individual leaves throughout the season. Shear back spent flower stems to prevent excessive self-seeding. In autumn cut back plant to about 6-8 inches, leaving some green growth, this will help it through the winter. Young shoots will appear at the base in Spring. **You may need to protect young plants with sticks as some cats really adore catnip!
