Nerium oleander (Oleander) 9 cm Pot

€ 8.00
A striking evergreen ornamental shrub with glossy foliage and vibrant blooms. Grown at Ivywood in Co. Clare for horticultural interest only. Highly toxic; not for internal use.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Nerium oleander is an evergreen shrub recognised for its dense, lance-shaped leaves and highly ornamental clusters of white, pink, or red flowers. Its upright structure, leathery foliage, and long flowering window give it a strong Mediterranean aesthetic. Although visually impressive, every part of the plant contains potent cardiac glycosides, so it must be handled with strict care.

Growing conditions: At Ivywood in Co. Clare, oleander is grown as a tender perennial requiring protection from Irish winters. It performs best with maximum sunlight, good airflow, and sharply drained compost with low moisture retention. Outdoors is only suitable during warm, settled summer periods; the plant must be brought indoors before night temperatures fall below 8–10°C. Irish humidity makes monitoring for fungal issues essential.

Traditional & herbal uses: Historically referenced in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern sources, oleander was associated with antimicrobial and cardiotonic activity due to its glycoside content. Modern toxicology, however, identifies these compounds—primarily oleandrin—as extremely hazardous. Our herbal medicine clinic does **not** use oleander internally, and research today focuses on its toxicity mechanisms rather than therapeutic application. Any medicinal discussion is strictly historical, as oleander is unsuitable for domestic or clinical herbal use.

Maintenance & harvesting: No harvesting is recommended. Wear gloves when handling, avoid sap contact. Maintain the plant in a pot for easy overwintering. Light pruning in late spring encourages a balanced shape. Replace topsoil annually to reduce pathogen load and avoid over-watering, which can lead to root decline under Irish conditions.
