Rubus ideaus plant

Rubus idaeus (Raspberry) 9 cm pot

€ 5.00
Raspberry (Rubus idaeus) is a vigorous, wildlife-friendly hardy perennial grown from our own stock in Co. Clare. Its leaves are traditionally used as a tonic herb, while the plant supports pollinators, birds, and soil ecology.
Description

Growth habit & appearance:Rubus idaeus forms vigorous, arching canes with soft green foliage and delicate white spring blossoms that mature into bright red summer berries. Its dense thickets provide superb ecological structure, offering nectar for early pollinators and later fruit for birds and small mammals. As a hardy perennial grown from our own stock in Co. Clare, it establishes reliably and contributes meaningfully to garden biodiversity.

Growing conditions:This hardy perennial thrives in full sun in Irish gardens and tolerates the cool, damp conditions typical of the west coast. Well-drained yet moisture-retentive soil is ideal. Mulching helps stabilise moisture and supports root health. Being native to Europe, it naturalises well in Irish soils and climate, producing its best crops with adequate light and annual pruning.

Traditional & herbal uses:Leaves of Rubus idaeus have been used traditionally as a tonic astringent herb, valued for their effects on uterine tone and gastrointestinal stability. Dried summer leaves are commonly prepared as a tea. Historically it has been employed for diarrhoea, as a gargle for sore throats, and as a supportive herb in postpartum care. Its berries are nutrient-dense and provide excellent late-season forage for wildlife.

Maintenance & harvesting:Harvest ripe berries in midsummer and young leaves in early summer for drying. Mulch annually with well-rotted manure or grass cuttings to maintain soil fertility. Cut back all two-year-old canes after fruiting to encourage new productive growth. Maintain good airflow around the base to reduce damp-related issues common in Irish weather.
