Ruta graveolens (Rue) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
Hardy aromatic perennial with blue-green foliage and small yellow flowers, traditionally valued for its distinctive scent and historical medicinal use.
Description

Growth habit & appearance:Ruta graveolens is a compact, strongly aromatic sub-shrub with finely divided blue-grey foliage and clusters of yellow, frilled petals that emerge through summer. The foliage contains volatile oils that release a sharp, resinous scent when handled, giving the plant a long history of garden and apothecary use. Its dense, architectural mound and glaucous colouring make it visually distinctive, especially when grown among darker greens.

Growing conditions:This hardy perennial is well suited to Irish gardens when provided with dry, free-draining soil and as much sun as available. Once established, Rue tolerates wind and poor soils and copes well with the cool, damp climate provided it is not waterlogged. As a Mediterranean species, it prefers lighter soils and benefits from raised beds or gravel mulches in wetter regions. Plants grown in our nursery in Co. Clare transplant reliably and adapt quickly to Irish conditions.

Traditional & herbal uses:Traditionally associated with liver stagnation and digestive discomfort, Ruta graveolens has also been used for headaches, palpitations, toothache and tense muscular states. Its strong aromatic profile made it a historic cleansing herb in monastic and folk traditions. The foliage is disliked by many browsing animals, giving it a mild protective role in mixed plantings.

Maintenance & harvesting:Rue thrives with light pruning after flowering to maintain shape and encourage dense growth. Harvesting is typically done when aerial parts are in full flower. Gloves are strongly advised when pruning or handling, as some people experience photosensitivity following skin contact. Ensure soils remain free-draining, particularly over winter, to avoid crown rot. Mature plants benefit from a dry mulch or gravel at the base to keep stems from sitting in damp. Seed can be saved easily if plants are allowed to mature fully.
