€ 5.00
A compact, aromatic hardy perennial with glossy evergreen foliage and rich pink-purple flower spikes, thriving in Irish conditions. Traditionally used as a bitter tonic and for gout and rheumatism.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Teucrium chamaedrys forms a dense, evergreen mound of small, dark green, leathery leaves arranged on square stems characteristic of the Lamiaceae. Its summer flower spikes carry vivid pink-purple blooms that are highly attractive to solitary bees and hoverflies. The plant’s tight form, glossy foliage, and prolonged flowering give it strong visual presence in herb gardens and dry borders, while its aromatic character contributes subtle ecological signalling to beneficial insects.

Growing conditions: A fully hardy perennial well suited to Irish gardens, Germander thrives in full sun and prefers free-draining, moderately dry soils. It tolerates wind and poor substrates, making it ideal for rockeries, dry walls, or Mediterranean-style plantings. Its evergreen habit ensures structure year-round even in exposed Irish conditions.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally used as a bitter tonic and for gout and rheumatism, Teucrium chamaedrys held a valued place in European herbal traditions. Its aromatic leaves were also used historically in digestive preparations. Ecologically, it is a dependable nectar source for small pollinators during warm, dry periods when other herbs may falter.

Maintenance & harvesting: Cut back after flowering to maintain its compact mound and encourage fresh growth. It responds well to light pruning throughout the season. Harvest aerial parts when the plant is in flower. Because it thrives in drier soils, avoid heavy mulches or overwatering, especially during winter. Divide older clumps if needed to maintain vigour.
