Stemmacantha carthamoides at Ivywood

Stemmacantha carthamoides (Maral root) 9 cm Pot

€ 6.00
A robust, hardy perennial with bold, thistle-like foliage and striking flower heads. Extremely well suited to Irish conditions and valued traditionally for supporting strength and combating fatigue.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Stemmacantha carthamoides forms a sturdy basal rosette of deeply lobed, silver-green leaves, each leaf displaying the strong venation and coarse texture characteristic of the Asteraceae. In maturity, it produces tall stems carrying large, scaly, thistle-like buds that open into intricate purple blooms highly attractive to bees. The plant’s bold architecture provides significant ecological value, offering nectar and structure within meadow-style or open garden systems.

Growing conditions: A fully hardy perennial well suited to Irish conditions, it thrives in full sun and moderately fertile, well-drained soils. It is tolerant of cool summers and withstands winter wet better than many other Asteraceae species.

Traditional & herbal uses: Maral Root has been traditionally used to address fatigue and to support physical strength, including historical association with muscle-building properties in Eastern European and Siberian herbal practice. Ecologically, its large flower heads offer substantial pollen and nectar resources for bumblebees and other pollinators, increasing biodiversity in open planting schemes.

Maintenance & harvesting: Maintenance is uncomplicated: keep soil moderately moist during establishment, then allow the plant to settle into its natural rhythm. Remove spent flower stems to encourage strong basal growth. Roots are traditionally harvested from plants in their second year or later. Divide mature clumps if needed, and ensure plants have adequate space to develop their full rosette form.
