Stevia rebaudiana growing at Ivywood

Stevia rebaudiana (Stevia) 9 cm Pot

€ 6.00
Stevia rebaudiana is a compact tender perennial with sweet-tasting leaves rich in natural glycosides, grown from seed in our nursery. It requires warmth and protection in Ireland and is best grown under cover.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Stevia rebaudiana forms a neat clump of bright green, lance-shaped leaves held on slender branching stems, typical of the Asteraceae. The foliage is smooth, lightly textured, and notably sweet due to its concentrated steviol glycosides. In warm conditions it produces small white flower clusters, offering modest nectar to insects. Its light, airy habit and vivid leaf colour contribute gentle visual structure in sheltered growing spaces.

Growing conditions: This is a tender perennial that cannot withstand Irish winters outdoors. It requires full sun, steady warmth, and low to moderate moisture, making a polytunnel or heated greenhouse essential. Growth often begins late—sometimes not until May—especially in cool springs. All plants are propagated from seed in our Co. Clare nursery, and we ship within Ireland only.

Traditional & herbal uses: Stevia has a long history of use as a natural sweetener, with leaves traditionally dried and powdered or infused for their intense sweetness. Beyond culinary use, the plant’s flowers support small pollinators in sheltered environments. It is widely cultivated in warm regions for its high-value glycoside content, and its ecological footprint is light due to its modest nutrient requirements.

Maintenance & harvesting: Water sparingly, especially before growth resumes in late spring, as the roots dislike cold, wet soil. Keep plants in a warm, bright position, and pinch back tips to encourage compact growth. Harvest leaves as needed throughout the growing season, ideally during dry weather. Cut back at the end of the season and overwinter under protection.
