Scutellaria laterifolia plant at Ivywood

Scutellaria laterifolia (Scullcap) 9 cm Pot

€ 4.00
A finely textured, herbaceous perennial with delicate blue-violet blooms, grown from cuttings in our nursery. A fully hardy species, it thrives reliably in Irish gardens.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Scutellaria laterifolia forms a graceful, upright clump of slender square stems and narrow opposite leaves, characteristic of the Lamiaceae. Its small lateral blue-violet flowers appear along the stem in summer, each with the distinctive skullcap hood that defines the genus. The plant contributes subtle colour, fine texture, and valuable nectar resources to ecological plantings, supporting bees and hoverflies throughout its flowering period.

Growing conditions: A fully hardy perennial well suited to Irish conditions, Scutellaria laterifolia prefers full sun and moist but free-draining soil. Although native to Europe, it adapts seamlessly to Irish gardens, remaining compact at around 30 cm. All plants are propagated from seed or cuttings in our nursery in Co. Clare, and we ship within Ireland only.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally used for stress, anxiety, insomnia, PMT, and low mood, the aerial parts have long been included in European and North American herbal preparations. Beyond its historical medicinal role, the species provides ecological benefit by offering continuous nectar along its laterally flowering stems, making it a valuable low-growing support plant for diverse insect communities.

Maintenance & harvesting: Maintenance is straightforward: keep soil consistently moist in early establishment, suppress weeds around young plants, and cut back after flowering to maintain a tidy habit. Plants can be divided and replanted or potted on to expand stock. Save seed once the heads dry fully. Harvest whole aerial parts when the plant reaches full flower.
